RANDOM MUSINGS 781 By Reagan Ufomba

The picture below is that of Simon of Cyrene carrying the Cross for Jesus. It is very commonsensical in life, that so many people carry other people's crosses, knowing or unknowingly, that sometimes look too early or too late to drop.

In the book of Matthew chapter 16 verse 24, Jesus told His disciples "if any of you want to come with me you must forget yourself, carry your Cross and Follow Me".

Simon of Cyrene was the man compelled by the Romans to carry the cross of Jesus of Nazareth as Jesus was taken to his crucifixion. According to all three Synoptic Gospels, "as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, him they compelled to bear the cross of Jesus".

The lessons of the Fifth Station of the Cross in the Passion Week is that often times people bear Crosses that are not theirs. These crosses could be by way of medals, laurels or the crucifixion. Passion week can be likened to a political transition in Nigeria. Remember the case of barabas and Jesus.

Last month, I found myself wandering around the Chapel of the Immaculate Coneption Seminary — that historic building that mould boys into men. I had a flashback. The old church there features small oil paintings for the Stations of the Cross, the step-by-step retelling of the crucifixion narrative. All fourteen stations are painted to tell the “Passion” in a semi-circle around the perimeter of the sanctuary. As with most of my visits to old Catholic buildings, the sensory religious experience of my childhood came flooding back to me: waking up at odd times, regular functions, ringing the school bell, countless masses, liturgies, and plays throughout the many Lenten seasons all filled my mind in the first station, the second station, and so on… until my attention was drawn on the FIFTH STATION — the one that always captivated my attention as a child, “Simon helps Jesus carry the cross.”

This idea, that a bystander named Simon would be called over to help Jesus carry the cross, and that he would do it, always arrested my soul.

Later, upon embracing my Bible-reading Protestantism, I actually read the passages of Scripture upon which the fifth station was based. Three out of the four gospels reported the story of Simon of Cyrene, and mention by name the man who helped carry the cross.

"As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross. — Matthew 27:32. And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. — Mark 15:21

And as they led him away, they seized one Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it behind Jesus. — Luke 23:26"

Each of these Scriptural reports tell us something different about this man, Simon of Cyrene, and in turn, tell us something important about our life with Jesus, and our life with others.

First, it is not to be overlooked that Simon carried Jesus’ cross. Matthew and Mark clearly state the object Simon carried: “His [Jesus’] cross.” This might sound obvious, but it is profound that this man, Jesus, who all the gospel writers clearly understand to be God incarnate, needs assistance at his moment of suffering. Is God not the one who bears the suffering for us? Why, then, does he need the assistance of what seems to be a random man? Simon carrying Jesus’ cross is our reminder of the humility of God. This is an attribute God does not need, nor is it an attribute ever expected of him. We probably more cleanly align with those who would shout at Jesus to come off the cross, or tell him to send a legion of angels to rescue himself, and mockingly place signs above him as to shame him towards a power we want him to display. To us, it would make sense for God to flex his omnipotent muscles during his moments of agony.

And yet he does not. This withholding is the very nature of Jesus, who, “though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:6–7). Shockingly, Jesus allowed a man he created to help him carry the cross. The strange, discomforting, beautiful, mysterious, and scandalous thing about God is that he often chooses not to act like it. What kind of God accepts the help of his own creation?

The second remarkable thing about Simon of Cyrene, is that he is named. It is significant that Simon carried the cross “behind Jesus,” as Luke mentions in his account. Simon of Cyrene became, in some metaphorical and perhaps very real way, the first Christian.

Before his arrest and betrayal, Jesus said to his would-be followers, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). To be a Christian is to live a “cruciform life,” a kind of existence that is shaped by and through the cross. We bear the cross Jesus provides for us. This is precisely what Simon did and precisely what we must do too. As St. Paul wrote, we do this so that we may know Jesus “and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death” (Philippians 3:10).

Simon of Cyrene, following behind Jesus with the cross, is the picture of discipleship. Christ has gone first. He has gone and is going to where we cannot. Still, we follow in his steps, bearing the cross behind him. This is why Christians today join in the song based off of the words of the martyr Sadhu Sundar Singh:

“The cross before me,

the world behind me.

No turning back,

No turning back."

 LESSONS ARE:

1. When we are called upon to bear our cross, we should do so without complain. It does not matter if the cross we are called to bear belong to us or to someone else.

2. Bearing the cross is not a sin, but remains the only way to our salvation.

3. As commonly said "no cross, no crown, and no crown, no cross".

4. When called upon to carry your own cross, bear it with utmost happiness and hope for the salvation. Who knows who would be nailed on it. Certainly, it was not Simon of Cyrene.

Happy Sunday folks!

OUR THANK YOU TOUR SENDING ANXIETY IN OPPOSITION CAMPS - Mbah

Following the ongoing ‘thank you tours of the various local government areas in the Enugu State recently embarked by the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State, Barr. Peter Mbah, indications have emerged that some political camps and opposition parties are becoming jittery.

Confirming this development in Ikem, Isi Uzo council’s headquarters, Dr Peter Mbah, the party’s governorship hopeful, in a thank you visit to the people of the local council area, on Tuesday, said reports of the anxiety in the opposition parties over his increasing popularity and wide acceptance by the electorate is evident from their tirade of invectives in the media.

Disclosing his reason for embarking on the thank you visit, which commenced last week Tuesday, Mbah said it behooved on him to show his gratitude to the people that voted for him during the just concluded PDP governorship primary election and on whose mandate he is flying the party’s flag.

While re-echoing his earlier position, Mbah, a former Chief of Staff to the Governor and Commissioner for Finance in the state, dissociated himself and the tour from any campaign colouration, stressing that expression of gratitude to party loyalists was different from canvassing for votes from the electorate.

Commending the PDP stakeholders and members in Isi Uzo for giving him “99.99 % votes,” Mbah assured them of his readiness to reciprocate their support with good governance if elected in 2023.

Earlier on, the PDP Woman Leader in the local government, Hon. Mrs. Virginia Edeh, dismissed as a hoax, any threat from other political parties in the local government council, adding that Isi Uzo people have always known and identified with one political party which is the PDP.

Mrs Edeh who assured of their readiness to give PDP all the votes from the council area added that Mbah’s pedigree alone would be a huge credible factor that would market him before the electorate.

“Our Incoming governor, by the grace of God, is going to emerge victorious come 2023. He’s the only candidate we know. We are mobilizing women from all the nook and crannies of the local government for his victory.

Isi Uzo has no opposition* We shall be giving those rearing their heads, if any, a hot chase. We shall give them a run for their money. *We are the winning women of Isi Uzo,” she maintained

HER NATIONAL ANTHEM RELEASED TEARS FROM HER EYES

When Tobi Amusan climbed the stage of the 2022 World Athletics Championships to pick up the Gold medal.. she had no tears streaming down her eyes..
.
Then the national anthem of Nigeria was played.. Tears rolled down her eyes!
.
Tobi Amusan remembered how a country that refused to sponsor it's athletes were enjoying stolen heroism.. How criminal politicians will steal her personal efforts for their own social media publicity but none even came to her aid on the road to Oregon, USA.
.
Tobi remembered the Ministry of Youth and Sports that dropped them in the middle of no where, no allowances, no proper care was going to take an applause they didn't deserve.
.
Tobi Amusan cried as the anthem of shame was played.. How the country made them look like thieves, bandits and Unknown Gun Athletes as they were humiliated from one drug check to another..
.
She remembered the particular incident of how they slept at the airport lounge on arrival and had to move straight to the open fields without care until some richer athletes dipped hands into their pockets and did an "akawo" to help out because Nigeria and the embassy never had a proper arrangement in place for them!
.
She was worried that instead of going back to the hotel to rest and celebrate her gold medal, she is going back to wash the one track suit and jerseys that a country as rich as Nigeria offered them..
.
At a point, she looked round the whole stadium to at least wave to her fans.. but realised that there was no "Green and White fan" anywhere in the stadium. Nigeria has sent no soul cheer them up but the budgets at home is filled with monies for fans.. which the Ministers and their girlfriends have looted and collected, travelled with the team to the USA to squander in various malls and hotels while the athletes run their lives out on the tracks..
.
As the anthem got to that line of "one Nation bound in Freedom.. bla bla bla".. she saw herself like a liar. Lying to the whole world about a Freedom and a one nation that doesn't exist. How the youths are being incarcerated, either in the hands of government or in the hands of bandits..
.
Tobi tried to hold back tears.. but how possible is it?? When Nigerian youths are talking about voting in a next president who said they should not worry about exchange rate. That their salaries will be paid in Naira while here, she is receiving $100,000..
.
Tobi Amusan knows that her neck can hang more medals and more youths in Nigeria can do more.. but they don't want to come to the track and fields.. they just want to eat agbado and cassava! Create demand and consumption and then enjoy sexually transmitted Unity from any Unifier..
.
Tobi didn't cry because of PDP VS APC.. she cried for Senseless Nigerian youths..
This is how the Lamentations Of A Bishop cries for Nigeria everyday when you wonder how you found yourself sharing a country with some of the mentalities that exist in it..

Terrorism Charges: You Can’t Try Me In Nigeria, says Kanu

Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has asked the Federal High Court to recuse itself from the case of terrorism and treasonable felony proffered against him on the grounds that the Court lacks jurisdiction to try his case.

The Government had amended earlier charges brought before the court, presenting a seven-count charge against him.

Kanu insisted that the trial ought not to take place at all since most of the crimes were committed in the United Kingdom, where the Court has no Jurisdiction over him since according to him, the UK has its Judicial system.

This was stated in his notice of preliminary objections filed by his lawyers.

The following are excerpts from the preliminary objections his lawyers filed.

“…That I know as a fact that the United Kingdom (of which London is the capital), is a sovereign state under International Municipal Law and has municipal laws punishing criminal offenses.

2) That I also know as a fact that jurisdiction is extrinsic to adjudication. It is conferred on a court, aliunde. It is not intrinsic.

3) That I know that as the elements necessary to constitute incitement in the alleged several broadcasts of the defendant/applicant occurred in London, United Kingdom, and not in Nigeria, the court in Nigeria has no jurisdiction to try the defendant/applicant on any charge founded on any such alleged incitement, even if the defendant/applicant enters within the geographical boundaries of Nigeria.

4) That I also know as a matter of fact that the alleged offenses for which the defendant was charged, do not constitute terrorism offenses in London, United Kingdom, where they were allegedly committed.

5) That I am further aware that there is an obligation on the Attorney General of the Federation to maintain international co-operation for compliance with International Treaties on terrorism.

6) That the defendant was abducted from Kenya and consequently extraordinarily rendered to Nigeria, without firstly subjecting him to extradition proceedings in Kenya; I know as a fact that this is a violation of all known international conventions and treaties on extradition.

7) That prosecuting the defendant on the 7-count amended charge would amount to allowing the complainants to benefit from their illegality and wrongdoing

8) That I am aware that he who comes to equity must come with clean hands, and no party should be allowed to benefit from his wrongdoing.

9) That I know as a matter of fact, that the extraordinary rendition of the defendant robs the Honourable Court of the requisite jurisdiction of trying the defendant on counts 4, 5,,6 and 7 of the Amended Charge.

10) That counts 1,,2, and 3 of the Amended Charge were brought under a non-existent law.

11) That count 3 of the Amended Charge relates to an offense allegedly committed in Ubuluisiuzor, in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, which is outside the territorial jurisdiction of the Honourable Court.

12) That I know as a matter of fact that an offense can only be tried by a court exercising jurisdiction over the place or area where the alleged offense was committed.

13) That counts 5,,6, and 7 of the Amended Charge do not disclose an offense known to law.

14) That there is no proof of evidence attached to the Amended Charge filed against the defendant.

15) That even the purported proof of evidence to be relied upon by the prosecution, does not disclose any prima facie case against the defendant.

16) That from the list of exhibits and witnesses attached to the Amended Charge, there is nothing relating to or linking the defendant to the 7-count charge, particularly counts 4, 5,,6, and 7 thereof.

17) That no final pronouncement has been made on the purported proscription of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as the said purported proscription is a subject matter of appeal in Appeal No: CA/A/214/2018, pending before the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal.

18) That the defendant/applicant cannot be arraigned anew or tried for an offense when the judgment that made a pronouncement on the instrument constituting a state of affairs as such an offense, is the subject matter of an appeal.

19) That it will be most unjust, painful, wicked, and unfair for the applicant to undergo the rigors of a full trial, when the Amended Charge as constituted, does not disclose a prima facie case against him.

20) That there is no ground for this honorable court to proceed with the trial against the applicant in the circumstance of this case.

21) That the court has the powers and a duty to stop a prosecution which on the facts creates abuse and injustice.

22) That it will be in the best interest of justice if the present 7-Count Amended Charge is struck out and or dismissed.

Can’t, therefore, asked the Court whether it has “the requisite jurisdiction to try the defendant on the 7- count amended charge, given the extraordinary rendition of the said defendant/applicant;

    b) Whether the honorable court has the jurisdiction to try the defendant/applicant for alleged acts constituted wholly by elements that occurred within the geographical space of a foreign sovereign nation and outside the jurisdiction of the court.

    c) Whether the defendant/applicant can be prosecuted for allegedly belonging to a proscribed organization when the purported proscription of the organization is the subject of appeal in appeal no: CA/A/214/2018, pending at the court of appeal, Abuja division?

    d) Whether the information as laid under counts 1,,2, and 3 of the amended charge is not founded under a non-existed law?

    e) Whether the radio broadcasts allegedly made by the defendant/applicant constitutes an offense of treasonable felony as envisaged under section 41 (c) of the criminal code Act, CAP C.38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004?

    f) Whether the information contained in counts 5,6 and 7 of the amended discloses the commission of any offense known to law?

    g) Whether the proof of evidence in support of the 7- count amended charge discloses a prima facie case against the defendant/applicant.

“We respectfully urge your Lordship to decline jurisdiction to entertain the instant Amended Charge, as the alleged offenses contained therein, were allegedly committed wholly in London, United Kingdom, and Anambra State, outside the territorial jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, ”he argued through his lawyers.

“The Honourable Court is further urged to strike out and/or dismiss the counts of the charge which are incompetent and brought under unknown provisions of the laws.

“We further urge this Honourable Court to hold that the purported proof of evidence to be relied upon by the prosecution did not disclose any prima facie case against the defendant, that will invoke the power of this Court to set down the case for trial.

“The 7-count amended charge filed by the Prosecution, we respectfully submit, is not only as naked and empty as a worthless paper, but not founded on existing laws, and the court is respectfully urged to, upon a meritorious consideration of the grounds upon which the objection is predicated, and argument in support thereof, to dismiss in its entirety this seven-count amended charge and accordingly discharge and acquit the defendant/applicant on those 7-count charges.”

The trial Judge, Hon. Justice  Binta Nyako, adjourned the case to November 10.

6 Ways to Recover Your Money After Being Scammed by Adediwura Adeaga

Have you ever received a call from ‘your bank’ asking you to ‘confirm’ your ATM pin? Of course, it’s not from your bank. It’s from a scam artist.

It is no longer news that scam artists are on the prowl like the devil, swindling innocent people on the pretense of a product or service which they claim to operate such as the sale of mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, money doubling or even as customer care officers of your bank.

These fraudulent acts sometimes happen via phone calls, on social media platforms or during robbery attacks. For instance, there are cases of people who are forced to transfer money to another account at gun point.

If you or someone you know has experienced this unfortunate incident, here is how to recover your money.

1. Don’t keep it to yourself

Most victims panic after they discover that they’ve been swindled by a fraudster. However, do not panic. Swing into action by informing your close friends or relatives who have legal or security connections. You know those folks who know a criminal lawyer or have contacts in the police or EFCC? They are the ones you should be talking to

2. Don’t bombard the scammer with calls

This is vital because by the time you begin to chat excessively with the scammer, or you bombard the scammer with too many calls he or she might decide to block you or destroy any means of you contacting him. Remember that you need his contact details to be able to trace him. Don’t let the fraudster know about your motive of reporting the case to legal authorities. Keep your conversation civil.

3. Report to any legal authority with evidence

Whether or not you have the scam artists number, report the case to any legal authority close to where you are. Report to the nearest police station and to the EFCC. Take along evidence such as the conversation history, transaction history and any evidence that can help the investigation to see that you’ve been swindled. They will get your statement which includes you narrating all that happened, the scammer’s location and contact details, and assist you in getting the right things done, such as contacting the fraudster’s bank thereby requesting for an immediate freeze on the account. The account will be rendered useless and legal actions will be taken with immediate effect.

4. Send a mail to your bank’s E-fraud team as well as the scammer’s bank

All banks now have an e-fraud team who now respond swiftly to any distress emails or calls. You can get your bank’s e-fraud email address or number by visiting the official website of your bank. Doing this makes it easier for banks to be aware of what is happening and they will direct you on steps or things to do to recover your money. They can further help you place the scammer’s account on a ban for less than 24 hours after evidence has been sent to them, before getting an official letter from the police and court (which will be done by the police).

5. Get a police report & court order

You will need a police report and court order to request for a recall of funds which you paid into the scammer’s bank account

6. Track the scammer

Legal authorities can track the scammer by getting his exact location thereby making it easier for the fraudster to be arrested. This will be done through the scammer’s contact details. This is the major reason why you don’t want to bombard the fraudster with too many calls or messages.

We hope you found these tips useful. If so, share with those closest to you.

EDUCATION: THE NATION DEVELOPER By Ibironke Oluwatobi O.

The idea of developing a nation without education is surrealism. For any community to be transformed, education must be considered a basic necessity.Education possesses the trans-formative power to spread across the whole hog of any nation and for a country like ours; it can offer the much sought development. This grain of truth is consolidated by Nelson Mandela’s words, “education is the most powerful tool which can be used to change the world”.Nigerian writer, Ujunwa Atueyigave a hint on the potency of education, prescribing it as the antidote to the challenges in all the constituent sectors of the country. With this knowledge, the thought of the slipshod state of our educational system becomes perplexing. The question of ‘why education is considered dispensable’ remains a myth. The closest thing to an answer is the hypothesis that the dilution of the educational quality in Nigeria is a ploy to limit the level of exposure of the naively educated.

Education, the repressed transformation tool, is continually drained of its potency by acts of botchery and self-interest. An evidence is the fact that the field of the nation is grassed by a multitude of ‘government approved’ institutions of knowledge, yet the signs of education are missing. This conundrum raises ashes of questions such as; what we call education, is it really educating or just a paper religion?According to Malcolm X, our pose object is no guarantee of education. He opined that “because you have colleges and universities does not mean you have education”. Ralph Waldo Emerson gave a near definition of our schooling system. He said “we are students of words, we are shut up in schools and college-and recitation rooms for ten to fifteen years, and come out at last with a bag of wind, a memory of words and do not know a thing.”
