The Lagos State Correctional
Centre for Boys, Oregun, Ikeja LGA, was filled with inspiration on Wednesday,
July 13, 2016 as Corps Member, Daniel Olawande with code number LA/15B/2952
donated 150 copies of Ben Carson’s book ‘Gifted Hands’ to the students and
impacted on them through inspirational talks from Mr. Abiodun Folawiyo, CEO
Shoespeed and some other notable personalities.
Teens raising their copy of Gifted Hands
with the Corps member
In his opening remarks, Corps
member, Daniel Olawande thanked God for giving him the grace to impact lives at
the present level and shared with the children the story of Ben Carson as
captured in the book he was distributing to them. He told them that they are
not bad, that they are not rejected but that they are good children and are
loved. He encouraged them to read the book and charged them to become great
people in future just like Ben Carson.
The project tagged "Inspire a
Lagos Teen" is a Personal Community Development Service Project initiative by
the Corps member to inspire and impact thestudents in the Correctional Centre.
This was captured in a life story by Mr.YinkaFolawiyo, CEO Shoespeed; who
represented the special guest of the occasion, Mr.NiyiAdesanya. In his story,
he was able to connect with teens sharing his early age experience; growing up
with little or no knowledge of father and being maltreated by his neighborhood
and peers alike. He told them about how he was dejected by everyone close to him
because he decided to follow his passion to become a Shoemaker and how he is
now being celebrated by everyone for his success in shoe-making. He informed
them that where they are now is meant to correct and encourage them to aim
outside the walls of the Centre. Still addressing them, him said; “it is not
about where you are now but where you are going from here.”
The Assistant Director, Skills
Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED; Mrs. Rachel Idaewo
interacted with the children and from her observation she labeled them as
“bright children”. She also addressed some interesting questions asked by the
children ranging from what is NYSC, how they can join NYSC and how to choose
personal goals. She told them about how the NYSC began and informed them that
they have to do well in their studies and go through the universities or
polytechnics and come out to join in serving the country through NYSC. She
concluded by appreciating the school officials for taking care of the children.
In a similar manner, the Ikeja Zonal
Inspector of the NYSC, Mr. Mordi encouraged the teens telling them that the
idea is to motivate them as the leaders of tomorrow while urging them to be
disciplined, obedient and law abiding, that by doing so they will become
leaders even up to the level of governors. He also urged them to aspire to
become like the Corps member.
In an interaction with one of the
teens, Benjamin Edet who shared how he is determined to become a better person,
he said his ambition is to become a banker and that he prays and studies always
to achieve his goal. While interacting with the Corps member, he was excited
for being able to inspire the Teens.
The highlights of the programme
featured a musical interlude from a Corps member, Franklin, a song by one of the
teens IfeanyiEjiofor, comedy by a teen, Joshua Favor and a life story shared by
a Corps member, Vincent Adeoba. All these were geared to inspire the teens to
become better persons. Overall, it was a life changing event for the children.
The programme was anchored by FT
and witnessed the presence of the Agege LGA NYSC Inspector, Mrs. Abdul Adeola,
the school Principal, Mr. L. O. Kotun, the Vice Principal, Mr. Salau, other
school officials, Mr. Ege, Mrs. Dawodu, Mr. Atolagbe and Corps members from
Agege LGA who added colour to the programme.
